Workers at the YUN NANXIN JLAHAO Garment factory, based in Yanjin City, China, report that the factory is assigning overtime work but deducting overtime pay if production targets are not met.

“They make us work until 8 PM. We only get 5 yuan for overtime if we meet the production target. We get only 2.5 yuan if we don’t meet it,” workers said.

They explained that regular working hours run daily from 8 AM to 8 PM. One sewing line, which includes more than 30 staff including supervisors and clerks, is tasked with producing up to 350 jacket pieces per hour. Workers are still made to work overtime without receiving full overtime pay if this target is not met.

Workers also report that they do not receive leave and are penalized up to 200 yuan even when seeking treatment at the factory clinic due to illness. They added that the intense overtime schedule leaves them physically exhausted, and the poor quality of the provided meals is affecting their health.

“There’s no leave. They deduct 200 yuan even if we’re sick and get permission to visit the clinic with a translator. The meals they give us are like stir-fried cauliflower, chicken, pork, or fish paste curry. But the food is inedible—like animal feed. We have to buy our own food outside. And we can’t even get clean drinking water,” workers said.

Workers claim that while the factory initially stated no deductions would be made upon completion of one year of service, someone who decides to leave after two years are still deducted a total of 860 yuan for medical exams, introduction fees, translation fees, photo fees, insurance, and fees labeled for the labor office.

YUN NANXIN JLAHAO Garment is a Chinese-owned factory located in Yanjin Industrial Park, employing over 800 workers and manufacturing the YOB YB YOB brand.
