#Letter
The forced overtime has still not changed until now at Myanmar Ming Fan. There have been no inspections, and no one has come to help us.
We are still being forced to work overtime. It feels like all our reports and complaints have been meaningless. The only thing that has changed is that the factory removed its name from the front sign. That alone shows how serious the situation is. The factory does not have fixed working hours. They release us only when they want to. Normally, overnight overtime should end at 5 a.m., but at Myanmar Ming Fan garment factory, it does not.
After working overnight, when it reached 5 a.m., we were not allowed to go home because the garments were not finished. Only when workers refused to continue working and tried to leave were we finally released. Even now, they say the garments are urgent and force us to work until 9 p.m.
On the overtime consent form, it says “only with voluntary consent,” but if we do not sign, the supervisors force us, saying we are not allowed to refuse overtime. They pressure us by saying the container deadlines will not be met.
No matter how much we work, the container deadlines are never met. Even during normal working hours, we are pushed extremely hard on production targets. From 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., we are forced to complete 1,200 pieces.
We cannot drink water or go to the toilet. If productivity drops even for about an hour, they come and shout at us and verbally abuse us. Now we are being made to work six consecutive days, and although workers requested that overtime be cancelled to take compensatory rest days, the factory used “urgent production” as an excuse and took away our Sunday rest day. This same thing also happened last month.
They call meetings and tell us that if we cannot accept it, we should resign. They say it is factory discipline. Is this really discipline? The supervisors themselves are completely unfair. Because they receive piece-rate wages and bonuses, they exploit workers in name only.
A WCC committee has been formed, but no matter what workers say, nothing is submitted or addressed. Now, when salaries are paid, wages are being deducted. The main issue is that skill allowances and grade pay are being reduced.
Around 400 workers are suffering like this. Fearing that the factory may disappear to avoid inspection, I am also providing the address. Myanmar Ming Fan factory is located in near Kantharyar bus stop, Shwepyitha Industrial Zone 1.
