I am from Pathein, and I work at a garment factory. The factory is Dong Long Garment Factory.
It is located in Pathein Industrial Zone, Kan Malin Kyun, Ward 13, Pathein City. There is a woman named Ma Pan Ei who verbally abuses workers whenever there is a mistake at work, using insults such as “you bitch” and other vulgar language. Ma Pan Ei works in the Finishing department and holds a line leader position.
She insults everyone working under her. When someone in a higher position scolds her, she then calls us girls and vents her anger by verbally abusing us.
Many workers in the factory are subjected to verbal abuse. Among them, workers who work under Ma Pan Ei are treated even more rudely and abusively. When workers eat snacks, she calls them over and scolds them, while she herself eats snacks among the piles of garments.
Sometimes Ma Pan Ei threatens to stab us with scissors. On Sundays, if we do not come to work because we are sick, we are grabbed and verbally abused using obscene language. We accept being spoken to firmly about work matters, but we are forced to endure being pointed at and cursed with vulgar insults.
We endure this abuse just to make a living. We do not get proper rest on Sundays. At least three Sundays a month, we are required to come to work. Because we are afraid of losing our jobs, we do not dare to file complaints. Even speaking out like this makes me feel afraid.
Out of fear of dismissal, we cannot say anything to the factory. Even now, opening up and reporting this feels frightening. There is a WCC group at the factory, but when WCC members pass by while the abuse is happening, they take no action.
Even when we report the verbal abuse, it is dismissed with comments like, “That’s just how it is.” Although the factory claims to have worker leaders, there is no resolution provided. Workers are forced to work every day in mental distress.

(An EC agreement has been signed between Dong Long Garment Factory and the workers. Clauses 15/16/17 of that EC agreement prohibit verbal abuse, physical threats, and bullying. The agreement states that if these rules are violated, three warnings must be issued, and if the violation continues, dismissal without compensation is permitted.)
