Workers from Myanto Industrial garment factory are being verbally abused by the supervisors and the Chinese national woman, not being granted legal leaves, being asked for excessive fabric outputs and day laborers with more than 3 months of service are not promoted as permanent stuffs. The workers said that the relevant authorities and officials didn’t help them.
The factory is located in the Mya Khatter Street, Mya Sein Yaung Industrial Zone, Hlaing Thar Yar Township and owned by a Chinese national. The factory is currently manufacturing Defacto brand jackets with more than 900 workers.
“There are around 50 day laborers in our factory but they are not appointed as permanent stuffs even after 3 months. Legal leaves are also not granted. We neither get a leave if we inform the supervisors in advance with phone if we have emergency cases on way to work. 6,200 kyats daily wages and 30,000 kyats attendance bonuses are cut for taking a leave.
The worker said they are asked for excessive fabric outputs more than they could sew. There are more than 20 to more than 30 people on a machine line, and they have to sew up to 35 pieces of fabric per hour. Even though the number of people in the machine line is different, they have to sew the fabric to the same standard.
“Line 6 and 7 leaders verbally abuse the workers all day. The line 7 and line 9 all super force the leaders who don’t verbally abuse us to do it. The foreigner woman also managing us directly by pointing her finger and we feel like hell every day,” said a worker.
They said that they are working in a workplace without dignity, and due to the unfairness of expert fee and discrimination, they are having difficulty and wants to solve it.
The working hours are from Monday to Friday until 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday until 6:30 p.m., and there is no day off on Sundays.
“The all super told that workers who can’t move to assigned machine lines will have to resign. She also discriminate us. We are tolerating due to our livelihoods but every day we are walking on the margins of being fired,” said a worker.
Workers want to work with dignity without being abused at in the workplace, want a sufficient wage and a fair working environment, but their rights are being violated, they said. The WCC group does not do anything for the workers right as they are only formed by the employer.
