Dengue fever is common during the rainy season when mosquitoes breed the most, and in the past 5 months which is from January to May 2024, there have been deaths from the disease in Yangon, according to the Department of Health.
Within 5 months, there were 377 cases of dengue fever in Yangon, and 1 patient died. The age of the patients are 35 kids from newborn to 1 year old, 83 kids from 2 years to 4 years old, 152 children from 5 to 9 years old, 76 children from 10 to 14 years old and 35 people above 15 years old; a total of more than 300 patients are infected.
“We have to be more careful about dengue fever during the rainy season. Floods and sewer overflows often occur during this month, so there are concerns about the mosquitoes breeding increase and more diseases. Another thing to take care of is that there is a risk of skin irritation and skin diseases due to unclean water from sewer overflows. We have not heard much about skin diseases this year because the fall have just started, but every year we can face skin diseases and health problems from unclean sewage water,” said residents of Dagon Township in Yangon.
According to the data, South Dagon Township has the highest number of cases and Myangone Township the second within Yangon Region.
It is known that it is necessary to avoid being bitten by the mosquitoes and carry out the process of covering the mosquito larvae to prevent them from growing to prevent dengue fever.
