Safe Migration, under the Ministry of Labour, announced on February 3 that over 120 overseas employment agencies had failed to pay their required sector-based fines and would now have to increase their monthly payments to 100,000 MMK.
According to the released list, there are 123 licensed agencies that still owe fines based on their respective sectors. Some agencies missed their deadlines, resulting in a mandatory monthly penalty of 100,000 MMK.
Among the 123 non-compliant agencies, the breakdown is as follows: 16 companies have already been fined 100,000 MMK per month for missing the deadline, 3 companies have failed to pay for the second time and 3 companies have failed to pay for the third time.
“The main reason for these penalties is that many agencies fail to submit family remittance verification reports. Some agencies also fail to meet the required remittance amount set by the authorities. As a result, agencies must submit monthly remittance verification reports, but when workers fail to send money back, agencies bear the consequences. The penalty will increase by 100,000 MMK per month if fines are not paid,” said an official from a licensed employment agency.
Additionally, agencies that fail to pay their fines will have their submission of new demand letters (job offers) suspended.
The Ministry of Labour's official notification also reminded agencies to submit monthly deployment reports on time and to provide quarterly updates on family remittance verifications, regardless of whether workers have sent remittances or not.
