Myanmar Dihuali factory workers cut for 1 day equivalent wages from the overtimes in addition of having to work substitute for Thingyan holidays

Workers from Myanmar Dihuali Grament (Dishang Group) said that they have to work 4 day substitutes for 5 Thingyan holidays and the remaining day is going to be cut for 8 hours from overtime. The factoy force the workers to work substitute day on February 25, March 10, 24 and 31 and they have to work as a fourth day on 31st.

8 hours of overtime are cut from the overtime that they worked from March 1 to 4. The workers report the issue to the labor office and there were no resolvents although they came to address the disputes.

“They initially said they would cut only for 4 hours but later it changed to 8 hours again.”

According to the labor law, workers should be given two times of the basic salary if they have to work on the off days. Myanmar Dihuali Grament exploits around 370 lakhs Kyats by exploiting 25,000 kyats from each worker. In addition, forcing them to work exceeding than 64 hours a week, is also violating standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

“We thought the problems will be solved after the Hlaing Thar Yar Labor Office’s officials came. But we still suffer. We only get paid daily wages. Actually, we should get overtime wages on Sunday. We already worked like that for 3 days and I can’t believe that the labor office is ignoring this,” said the worker.

The manager women intimidated that workers who don’t work substitute days will not be given overtime wages and their daily wages and attendance bonus will be cut.

The workers also need to take a ticket to use the restroom. Each machine lines are given only 2 rest room tickets.

‘The factory always stipulate new rules which is not in the EC contract and intimidate with charging. Male workers are also told that they will be fined if they work wearing a longyi,” said a worker.

The workers said that Myanmar Dihuali Grament (Dishang Group) locates at the intersection of Anawrahtar Street and Ayayarwaddy street, Anawrahtar Industrial Zone, Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon and manufacturing Japanese fabrics.
