Myanmar Labour News have uploaded a news on 26th February that the KBL garment factory is calling overtime until midnight and supervisors are verbally abusing the workers.

The workers said the coalition of officials came to inspect on March 1, but the abuse are still on going. The factory is owned by a Chinese national and locates at Industrial Zone (1), Kyan Sit Thar Street, Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon Region and there is no trade union or workplace coordination committee to address the workplace disputes.

The working hours are from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and the overtime is until 9:00 or 11:00 pm and the workers are having concerns due to the current political situations.

The workers negotiated not to call overtime until midnight but the supers refuse and intimidate them that they will be fined with no overtime at all for a month and workers have no choice but to continue doing the overtime due to the livelihood.

The workers said that they reported to the news outlet to seek resolve for the abuse but its not currently what they except yet.

“The factory taught some workers in advance how to answer the inspectors’ questions and only 3 workers from each cavities are asked and the workers answered as they are taught by the manager,” said a worker.

The workers are called overtime on the peasants’ day (March 2) and on Sunday although the inspection have done.

“We sometimes work to 8:00 or 11:00 pm and also on peasants’ day and Sundays. The managers and super visors said that the inspecting team said that overtime is legal if both employer and employee agree. I believe that the inspecting team and the employer together suppressing us,” said a worker.

The fabric fees are also exploited such as only the workers who are comfortable with the supers are get paid instead of the workers’ who worked hard at the end of the month while issuing the fabric fees. The workers said that they are unsatisfied with this decisions.

“We want to request to issue the salary at around 4:00 pm on the pay day and it is not convenient to get paid late. We want to get back home early on the pay days and there are many thieves are robbers on the street due to the current political situations,” said the worker.
