The workers from the SHUNRONG GRAMENTS MYANMAR factory which locates at Shwe Li Street, Industiral Zone 4, Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon Region told that their manager told them that those who don’t work substitute days will be cut for 10 days.

The SHUNRONG GRAMENTS MYANMAR manufactures PROTECTIVE INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS with more than 500 workforce and it only have a workplace coordination committee without having a trade union although it had been operating for 4 years.

The working hours are from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm including 2 hours of overtime and have to work for whole night on some days and public holidays without their consents.

“We have to work 3 days as substitute in March for 10 Thingyan holidays and the manager told the workers who don’t work on March 18th (Sunday) that those who take leave and absent will not be given those wages for 10 days,” said a worker who don’t want to be named. And the workers said there is no reason to accept this decision.

“What we would spend if they are going to cut for the holiday that we get once a year. They have been asking fabric exceeding our productivity and those overtime we worked to finish the fabrics were also unpaid,” a worker said.

The factory called 5 or 6 workers per cavity on March 27th (Public Holiday) and they were unpaid although they worked from 7:30 to 11:00. The supervisors are also verbally abusing the workers for not finishing the fabric outputs.

“They usually don’t give casual and medical leaves easily. We only get medical leaves and labeled as absent most of the time. The drinking water is not purified although they said it came from a water purifier, so we have to buy ourself and we also think the clinic is just fancy as it never have medicine for any issue although there is a nurse,” said a worker.

The workers said that they want the factory to address the issues and to ask their consents for working for overtime and to pay the unpaid overtime with backdate calculations.

In addition they also said that they want to request to approve leave for valid reason, to provide purified water and to provide medicine in the clinic and not to cut wages for not working substitute days for Thingyan holidays.
