Workers from the Tia Hong garment factory located in the Watayar Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon Region, report ongoing violations of labor rights and unlawful practices within the workplace.
Workers alleged that the male cutting line leader at the factory frequently takes unauthorized photos of them, creating a tense and uncomfortable environment.
“He even takes photos when we go to the toilet. If we sit down just for a moment because the work is overwhelming, he takes photos of that too. Even when we take leave according to the law, he threatens us, saying he’ll transfer us to another department,” said one worker, who requested anonymity.
They added that workers are also being forced to do overtime without their consent, and that they are insulted in the workplace by being referred to as “those dudes” and “those ch*cks,” degrading terms used by the supervisor.
The male cutting leader reportedly has just over one month of experience, but his behavior has already created serious pressure in the workplace, according to workers.
Although the factory’s workforce has decreased, those remaining are still forced to work under growing pressure. Workers describe the factory’s management style as oppressive, designed to instill fear and suppress worker rights.
The factory has also failed to replace a vacant worker representative position and continues to employ day-rate workers for over three months without transitioning them to permanent status with full benefits, as required by law. Reports also indicate thosecases of unjust terminations.
