Workers from Jin Kai Hui Garment Factory are demanding to receive their full attendance bonus, according to several workers at the factory.
They stated that the factory shut down operations for up to 9 days this month, allegedly due to production-related reasons.
“They’re refusing to pay the full attendance bonus for the closed days. That’s why we sat in protest inside the factory compound after lunch to demand the full payment,” said one worker.
Workers explained that if they work without absence throughout the month, they are entitled to 50,000 MMK attendance bonus, but due to the recent closures, the factory is denying full payment, prompting their demand.
“The factory said they’ll only pay 7,000 MMK for those closed days. Even the 7,800 MMK we should receive is being withheld. And since it was the factory’s decision to close, it counts as their fault. So, we’re asking for the full attendance bonus. They responded by threatening that if we miss work, they’ll deduct wages or even fire us,” a worker reported.
According to workers, around 150 employees work at Jin Kai Hui, which is located in U Aung Thu Road, Industrial Zone 2, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon.
“The factory keeps opening and closing unpredictably open for one day, then closed again for two. It’s added up to 9 closed days. They offered only 7,000 MMK and refused to pay the full bonus when it reopened three days ago. Now they’re bargaining, saying they’ll only pay full if we meet production targets. But how can we finish everything when we’re only starting now? We’d have finished in time if they had told us earlier in the morning. Now, it’s reached the point where we have no choice but to protest,” workers said.
The latest update from the protest is that the factory has agreed to pay only 25,000 MMK, and workers who reject that amount have been told to submit resignation letters. They’ve also been told that wages will be disbursed on the 5th of the month.
“We’re not even sure if we’ll get our pay on the 5th dat of the month. Wages have been delayed three times before, and once they even split it into two instalments. We’re really worried we won’t get anything this time either,” one worker shared.
Workers also mentioned that Jin Kai Hui is a small-scale garment factory, mainly producing safety wear and protective uniforms.
