YOYIKA GARMENT factory workers said that they want to request to give them legal benefits as they are not entitled to social security and workers with more than 3 months of service are not appointed as permanent workers.

The Chinese national owned factory is located at Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon and manufacturing LIVADES and Laskikaru brand fabrics with more than 700 workers. And there is no trade union in the factory which can resolve the workplace disputes.

There are more than 100 day laborers who are not yet appointed as day laborers although they already have 3 months of service and they are dismissed for just missing a day of work and forced to hide during inspecting.

The working hours are from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm and a cavity with just around 40 workers are asked for 700 fabrics in 10 hours and the all supers and supers are verbally abusing them to make it happen.

“They asked excessive fabric outputs which we have to work tirelessly for it. We even have to sign a warning for quality drop fabrics and they neither inform us about the overtime in advanced and told us about that only when we are going to go back home. The overtimes are also mandatory and they are all night and all evening overtimes, the workers who refuse to work overtime will be discriminated and pressurized to resign from the work themselves,” said a worker.

The casual leaves and medical leaves which all workers are entitled to are not allowed and workers can’t get access to social security leave although they contributed for it monthly,” said a worker.

“Not being entitled to leaves and social security benefits is a huge loss for us, we are cut for 5,800 kyats daily wages and 3,5000 kyats attendance bonus if we submit a leave no matter health or emergency issues,” said the worker.

The workers said that they want the factory to give them access to casual and medical leaves, to apply day laborers with more than 3 month service as permanent workers and not to verbally abuse while asking for fabric outputs.
