Workers at Win Land Co., Ltd, a garment factory located in Hlaingtharyar’s Myo Thit Industrial Zone in Yangon, reported to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) that they are being forced to work for seven consecutive hours without a break, violating labor rights and workplace safety norms.

According to the workers, the factory's daily working hours run from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM, with only a short lunch break at noon. “After lunch at 12:00 PM, we’re made to work straight through until 7:30 PM with no rest at all,” one worker said.

In addition, the factory reportedly requires workers to report 10 minutes early for daily meetings, and legal leave entitlements are often denied. Workers claim that any absence results in salary deductions, regardless of the reason.

“We don’t get our entitled leave or rest days. Medical leave is not approved. We lose social security benefits and even our worker ID cards. A single missed day can cost us up to 50,000 kyats in deductions,” a worker stated.

Workers are being pushed to meet unrealistic targets of 150 to 350 garments per hour in the production lines, which employ over 50 workers each. Supervisors and line leaders are reportedly verbally abusive if targets are not met, pressuring workers to do excessive overtime.

“Supervisors curse at us if we can’t meet these targets. Since the new manager arrived, the finishing department supervisors have become even more aggressive. We are forced to work every Sunday and on national holidays. Even when sick, we’re pressured to work overtime. We’re treated unfairly and discriminated against if we refuse,” workers said.

They also raised concerns over poor-quality drinking water, which reportedly has a foul smell, and a shortage of company-arranged transportation, making commuting difficult.

Despite numerous issues in the workplace, the factory’s Workplace Coordinating Committee (WCC) has reportedly failed to address or resolve the workers’ complaints.

“The WCC members were not chosen by the workers. The factory management selected the representatives, and we just had to vote for them. That’s why they’re not working to solve our problems,” a worker explained.

Win Land Co., Ltd employs more than 650 workers and is owned by Chinese citizen. The factory is located at the corner of Mya Tharaphi Street and Myakhuanyo Street, Myo Thit Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon, and is known to produce garments for brands such as FB Sister and Workman.
