Workers at Victor House Co. Ltd garment factory have reported to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) that the factory does not allow workers to take their entitled leave, and wages and benefits are being cut when workers are absent. They also say leave is granted unfairly.

“We get scolded when workers don’t feel well and miss a day. We can only take leave if they allow it. They only pay the daily wage and even when leave is granted. They cut all the other benefits. Whether we get leave or not depends on whether we’re on good terms with the supervisors,” workers said.

They added that missing just one day of work can cost them as much as 50,000 MMK. Each worker is forced to sew 2 to 3 parts per item per hour to meet high hourly quotas due to the production targets.

“They ask for 60 pieces per hour from 30 workers. One person has to sew two to three points per piece. The line supervisors shout and curse at us if we fall short. The line leader is even worse. They scold us when quality drop or when styles change. We mostly sew trousers, shirts, and BB items,” workers said.

Workers also said that mobile phones are banned in the workplace, making it difficult to contact family in emergencies. They said the management claims phones are not allowed because they fear workers might take photos of garments and share them with other factories.

Victor House Co. Ltd is owned by a Chinese citizen and is located in Aukhtaik, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon. Workers said around 900 workers are currently employed and manufacturing garments at the factory.
