Workers at the Tsang Yih Footwear factory, which manufactures Adidas brand, say their recent demands have been successfully concluded, with the factory agreeing to nearly all of their requests.
“They raised the basic daily wage from 5,200 kyats by 600 kyats, making it 5,800. Subsidies were increased to 3,800 kyats—this includes the 2,000-kyat government subsidy and 400 kyats for rice and cooking oil, which they will continue providing as before. So, in total, the daily wage package now comes to 12,000 kyats. We won’t be paid for four of the seven protesting day. That’s all,” workers said.
The workers began their demands on May 14 inside the workplace, calling for a wage increase. The factory initially agreed to a 900-kyat wage raise through a formal agreement during the protests, but workers rejected it, stating it was not sufficient, and continued their protest.
Over 6,000 workers participated in the protest, which lasted for seven days. “We’re all happy now. Everyone will return to work at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow,” said a female worker.
The Tsang Yih footwear factory employs more than 6,200 workers and is located in Anawrahta Industrial Zone Section 2, near Apyinpadan Ward, Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon.
Meanwhile, workers at the Myanmar Pou Chen factory in the Thadukan Industrial Zone, which also manufactures Adidas footwears, also demanded that daily wages be increased to 13,000 kyats and are currently in negotiations.
