A pregnant worker from True Green City plastic pallets manufacturing factory was dismissed from her job after filing a complaint with the labour office, according to the Solidarity Trade Union of Myanmar (STUM). The female worker, who had worked at the factory for a year, said that the manager pressured her to sign a resignation letter upon learning she was pregnant.
“You’re pregnant, right? We can’t keep pregnant women in the factory. Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant? Sign the resignation letter,” the manager said, according to the affected worker.
The pregnant worker explained that she was just over one month pregnant and still physically capable of fulfilling her duties. However, the factory manager continued to insist that she resign, she said.
When the trade union meditated, the factory on June 19 offered her the option to work as a day-rate worker, and told her she would be allowed to work for only about three more months.
Then on June 23, the worker stated that she was dismissed from her job on the grounds that she had filed a complaint with the labour office.
True Green City Co., Ltd is a plastic pallets manufacturing factory located on Maha Myine Road, in the Watayar Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon. The factory had previously attempted to dissolve the trade union, dismissed its leaders, and recently faced worker demands for a wage increase.
