Thousands of workers GTIF EASTAR (3) factory haven’t get their compensations

Workers from GTIF EASTAR (3) garment factory said that the factory don’t give them any compensations for the close down period after the fire incident. 

The workers are expecting to get compensations as other workers from Honor and Solamoda factories which had similar incidents get theirs. The factory told them they will get paid when the factory gets enough orders but not paying them when they actually get it.

Workers didn’t get any help during the close down period. They have been trying to ask for the compensations but the factory even said they don’t need to pay. The factory said that they will pay if other factories do but still hesitating while other factories have already given to their workers.

“The factory said they are no longer obligated to pay after 3 months of the fire incident according to the law. But we faced many difficulties since then until now,” the workers said.

“The factory have enough orders for the whole 2024 with Lpp and Ovs brands. Neither the brands of other organizations help us,” they said.

“Workers from Solamoda factory get paid their compensation with the same salary before the incident after the workers reported to the central government. Both factories burnt on the same day but we weren’t get paid yet while Solamoda workers get paid in the previous month,” the worker said.

(Note - GTIG EASTAR (3) factory is a Chinese national owned factory that manufacture brands such as OVS, KIABI, C&A, TESCO, ZARA, House F&F Brand, including TESCO Brand leather warm clothes. In March 2021, the factory was closed for 7 months after a fire incident. The factory owner is refusing to pay compensation to the employees for the period of the factory closure.,The GTIG-EASTAR Garment Factory located in the War Ta Yar Industrial, Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon region and  hires around 2,000 workers, so the damages are many.

The factory workers were recalled after 7 months but workers from remote areas were given only 3 days to came back, and most of them lost their jobs due to the difficulties of going back due to the political situation.
