Workers from Teng Hui Myanmar Knitting wool factory say they were dismissed for taking emergency gate passes or missing just one day of work, according to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM). The factory reportedly consists of six buildings and employs over 6,000 workers.
“They even fire workers who take an emergency gate pass for urgent family matters after they’ve arrived at work. Just missing one day can get us fired. They don’t grant any leave entitlements. Even if it’s leave, they deduct daily wage and production bonus for absence,” workers said.
They also report discrimination in production bonus between new and senior workers, and say they are pressured to work overtime if they don’t meet production targets.
“The production bonus for new and old workers differs by two to three times. The target difference is just about one piece. They scold us if we don’t meet the target. The line supervisor herself scolds us, in front of everyone. We will be fired immediately if we complaint,” they said.
Workers are forced to work overtime, both evenings and nights, and even on Sundays without rest when targets aren’t met, according to the workers. Most of the daily wage workers are men, and they say dismissals happen at any time. The factory toilets are extremely unsanitary, and there is an insufficient supply of water, making conditions worse.
Teng Hui Myanmar Knitting wool factory is located near Yoe Gyi Village, Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region, and is known to be owned by a Chinese national.
