According to STUM’s press, the officials of the Sunrise (Myanmar) Fashion Factory said that a worker called Ma Khin Ma Ma Myat was dismissed from her job on January 26th after complaining about the welfare card without following their process.

It is known that the cavity clerk was given a copy of the card to pay the social security fee and the card for Ma Khin Ma Ma Myat, since she started to work at the factory at November 17.

Ma Khin Ma Ma Myat received three days of medical leaves from the social security clinic due to poor health conditions but the manager permits only a day and label the two other days as absent without informing as she did not apply the leave in advance.

As Ma Khin Ma Ma Myo suffered from her health conditions again in the middle of January, she submitted the social security clinic’s prescription of medical leave to the factory in the afternoon of the day the incident took place, but the manager denied to give the medical leave but instead an unpaidleaves as the new welfare cards are under process.

Therefore, Ma Khin Ma Ma Myat headed to the HR office to said that she can’t access the new card as she already got the old one and to pay the social security with it. But she was dismissed on January 26 accusing that she complained them.

"Ma Khin Ma Ma Myat has a limited amount of services in the factory, so that she would be less entitled to benefits if with the new card. Taking medical leave with 3 months of service means unpaid. But she would be entitled to full benefits if she renewals the old card that have years of service. But the factory does not process these,” Solidarity of Trade Unions, Myanmar (STUM) said.

It is said that the social security clinic employee did not give her signature on the new card number, so when she asked her to pay the welfare fee with the old card, the HR clerk said that she could not do it.

The STUM team also learned that Ko Win Hlaing Oo, a worker in the Finishing Department of the Sunrise (Myanmar) Fashion Factory, was told that he would be fired from his job for taking a gate pass.

Both workers refuse to sign on the notice paper that the factory pressurize them to do. The WCC group formed by the factory did not negotiate for the workers.

Sunrise (Myanmar) Fashion Co.,Ltd which is manufacturing GLACIER, Iusso and HK EORKS LONDON is locates at Kyauk Sein Street, Thar Du Kan Industrial Zone, Yangon with around 1500 workers and have been operating for about 5 years, the workers said.
