Workers at Sunlong (Myanmar) Sports Co., Ltd sewing factory say they are still being required to do regular overtime. They report working daily until 8:30 PM and not receiving any rest days, even on holidays.
“We’re still working until 8:30 PM. After news about the factory came out, they let us go at 6:30 PM that day. But the very next day, they brought us back until 8:30 again,” workers said.
On Saturdays, workers must work until 6:30 PM, meaning the weekly limit of 20 hours of overtime has been exceeded.
“We can only finish at 6:30 PM on Saturdays. It is until 8:30 PM on other days. We've been doing this since April, and now it’s already July, and we're still doing it. It’s hard to get home late like this. Over time, it’s affecting our health. But we can’t say no—they pressure us if we don’t work,” said one worker.
Workers also said they have to work every other Sunday, too. While the general workplace conditions are okay, the excessive overtime is becoming unsustainable.
“It’s also hard to change jobs. Most people can’t keep up with the overtime. Some workers live far from the factory, so they get home very late at night, which is tough. It’s not easy to get a gate pass if we don’t want to work overtime but leave. We need multiple approvals and signatures. Sometimes we can’t even get to leave. Even when we work overtime, we only get paid overtime wages—nothing else is deducted, but we’re not getting any extra either,” said workers.
Sunlong (Myanmar) Sports Co., Ltd is located in front of Max petrol station, near Nwar Chan bus stop, Thadukan Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon.
