Shwe Zarmani garment factory requires overtime work without workers’ consent

We are from Thardukan Industrial Zone, Shwepyitha Township, Yangon Region. We are requesting assistance.

Workers are being required to work overtime without their consent at the Shwe Zarmani garment factory. Overtime work is required until 7:30 p.m., and sometimes even past 8:00 p.m.

Workers’ consent is not asked when overtime is required. Workers are also not asked to sign any agreement to consent to working overtime.

If we say that we do not want to work overtime, we are asked why. Because of this, we have no choice but to work silently. Some workers at the factory come from far away. There are workers who have to come from Hmawbi to work.

When overtime work runs late, male workers in particular face great difficulties. We only reach home after 8:30 p.m. if we leave at 7:30 p.m. They are also frequently stopped and checked on the way.

Because returning home is unsafe, we are very concerned about security when being required to work late overtime. We want the relevant authorities to know that the factory is requiring workers to work overtime without even asking them to sign consent.

The factory produces garments for Japanese brands. The owner is a Myanmar citizen.
