Workers at Rong Da garment factory have reached a mutual agreement with the factory over their wage increase demands, according to workers.

“Daily wage is now given 10,000 kyats, overtime is 2,200 kyats and attendance bonus is 60,000 kyats, and the whole amount of it will be deducted if one day is missed. Workers have agreed, and the agreement has been signed,” said workers.

They also said that no daily wage will be paid for the two protest days, but all workers will return to the factory on the reopening day.

Previously, workers had demanded to raise the daily wage from 8,800 kyats to 13,000 kyats, overtime pay from 2,000 kyats to 2,500 kyats, and a corresponding increase in the attendance bonus.

The factory had proposed three different wage schemes during early negotiations, but workers refused to accept those offers.

“Officials from the Labour Office arrived when the protest became public. Workers accepted the final result and after continued negotiations, a collective agreement was signed. We achieved this through unity,” a worker said.

The demand started on the morning of June 13 and concluded the following day. Rong Da factory employs over 2,000 workers, and 90% reportedly participated in the protest.

RONG DA Garment factory is a foreign-invested, Chinese national-owned factory located on Min Bandu Pagoda Road, Watayar Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon, according to Myanmar Labour News.
