Workers at Ever Lead Myanmar factory say the factory is forcing them to work overtime during the Tazaungdaing public holiday without giving them a break.
They report being made to work continuous overtime inside the factory, with workers required to sign for two hours of overtime per weekday and five hours on Saturdays.
“They’re forcing us to work on religious holidays like Tazaungdaing without any consent from workers. Calling us for overtime even on such important religious days is excessive. We already work overtime every day. Though we are made to sign for just two hours a day, in reality, we often work more than that. We can’t refuse even if we don’t want to work. Now they say the garments are urgent, so they’re calling us for overtime even on religious holidays,” one worker said.
Workers say that the factory temporarily suspended some of the overtime after raising complaints about excessive overtime in the past. However, they are now being made to work long hours again under the pretext that the garment orders are urgent.
According to the workers, the factory's WCC (Workplace Coordinating Committee) has not made any arrangements to coordinate or protect the workers’ rights, and instead is operating solely in line with the factory’s decisions.
“Religious holidays should be respected. But right now, it feels like everything is being done according to the wishes of the foreign factory owners. We should respect and observe religious holidays and traditional customs,” they said.
