Workers from Myanmar Arysta LifeScience Co., Ltd., an agricultural chemical company located at Crystal Tower, Junction Square Compound, Kyaun Taw Road, Kamayut Township, Yangon, have recovered over 2,670 lakhs MMK in unpaid compensation.
The company had terminated 28 workers, some with over 30 years of service, by breaching their EC contracts. As a result, the workers filed legal claims to recover their due compensation. The dispute was resolved through out-of-court mediation, resulting in the workers successfully recovering 267,270,355 MMK.
According to STUM (Solidarity of Trade Unions Myanmar), which assisted the workers, the compensation issue was settled through negotiations.
“We got our money back. We were preparing to file a lawsuit, but before proceeding, an agreement was reached through mediation,” said a representative assisting the workers.
Some had over 30 years of service among the 28 affected worker. The company refused to pay severance and pension benefits, stating that payments could only be made after outstanding sales commissions were collected from sales representatives initially. This violated the EC contracts and was seen as a serious human rights violation against long-serving employees, leading to legal action.
“The company is depositing the money into bank accounts. All 28 workers are receiving payments, but not the full amount yet. They said they would arrange the rest later, but it’s unclear when,” a worker reported.
Myanmar Arysta LifeScience Co., Ltd. had committed contract breaches, labour rights violations, and worker exploitation, prompting STUM to support the affected workers in reclaiming their full entitlements.
