Workers at Myanmar Yangon Richang Apparel Co., Ltd, owned by Nisho, say they are working without rest days because they are required to work overtime every Sunday. Workers also say the factory frequently requires overnight and late-night overtime shifts.
“It has begun to affect our health as we have to work overtime so often. When workers refuse overtime, line supervisors and supervisors scold and shout at us in front of others. Because of that we are forced to do even if we do not want to work overtime,” workers said.
Workers say the heavy overtime workload has affected their health, but medical leave is not granted when they request. They say overtime continues to be required every Sunday, and if daily wage workers miss one day of work due to illness, they are dismissed. For salaried workers, the factory deducts daily wages and attendance bonuses.
“They deduct 10,000 kyats from the daily wage and 40,000 kyats from the attendance bonus if we miss one day of work. They also cut other benefits. On top of that, they set production targets that are impossible to meet. Supervisors scold us when we cannot reach the targets,” workers said.
Workers also say they are not granted leave that they are entitled to under labour law. They also claim that daily wage workers were dismissed after reports about labour rights violations at the factory appeared online.
“They said news about violations in the workplace appeared on the internet, and they dismissed the daily wage workers. Buyers from the garment brands came to inspect, but the factory simply dismissed the daily workers. The toilets are also not clean. Factory management knows about this but does nothing,” workers said.
An official from the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) said dismissing daily wage workers in such a way constitutes a violation of labour laws.
“Right now, working hours are assigned however the factories want and they call workers when there is work and dismiss them when there is not. Wages are paid however they want. Sometimes workers are not paid for Sunday work. In reality, daily wage workers are also workers, and they should be hired as permanent workers after completing three months of service,” the official said.
