MYANMAR SINYOUNG FASHION CLOTHES garment Factory workers said that the employer is violating than before after ministry’s cosmetic investigation of excessive overtime issues and failure to take actions.
The factory is owned by a Chinese national and located at Yangon-Pathein Road, Asugyi Ward, Htantapin Township, Yangon region and hires more than 500 workers including child laborers and day laborers.
“The working hours are from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm. But we are working until 9:00 pm due to excessive fabric orders. We are very tired and want to rest early on some days but we can’t. We are forced and pressurized. Those who don’t work overtime are discriminated against. We reported to the labour office for excessive overtime recruitment but it just got worse after their investigation,” said a worker.
The factory manufactures Sinsay brand pants and workers are cut for 4,800 kyats daily wages, 2,000 kyats subsidy, 1,000 kyats meal allowance and 30,000 kyats attendance bonus. Child laborers are forced the same as adults and more than 60 day laborers are hired. Day laborers with more than 3 months of service are not appointed as permanent stuffs.
“Workers are asked for excessive fabric outputs that exceeds than their productivity. A cavity with 45 people including clerk, seamstresses, helper and supervisors are asked for 50 good quality garments per hour. We are working nonstop but the supervisors verbally abuse us if we don’t finish the demanded outputs. There is no one who will stand for us and we can’t complaint,” said a seamstress.
Workers are having difficulties as the information of the worker who complaint to labour office is informed to the employer back. Workers are seeking for the employer to ask only for possible fabric output, to not assign child laborers the same tasks with adults, to provide maintenance for the restrooms and to allow legal leaves.
