Supervisors at Myanmar S.Flamingo Garment Co., Ltd are demanding portions of workers’ wages, according to employees at the factory.
“They cut money if we don’t work overtime. Sometimes they cut 30,000 or even 50,000 kyats. As soon as we get our wages, we have to give it to the supervisors,” workers said.
Workers said they are forced to work full-night overtime and on Sundays. If they can’t do it, supervisors ask for up to 50,000 kyats and threaten that they should leave the job if they don’t comply.
“Our daily wage doesn’t even reach 10,000 kyats. But they take 30,000 or 50,000 kyats at a time. It’s not HR that’s cutting it—it’s only when we get our wages that we have to hand it over to the supervisors,” they said.
Workers said it’s unclear whether the HR department is aware of this, but the act of deducting and demanding money is a violation of labor law and is seen as extortion.
“When wages are handed out, we have to give money to the supervisors. They make us sign warning letters by saying we made a mistake too. But why noy just follow the labour law if it’s a real mistake. What’s happening now—asking for 50,000 kyats—is too much. Just because they can speak a little Chinese, they’re abusing their position and extorting workers,” they said.
