Workers at Myanmar Handsome garment factory say their rights are being affected because the factory has not provided them with copies of their Employment Contract (EC) agreements. More than 2,000 workers are employed at the factory, and workers say they do not know the terms included in the EC contracts.
“We cannot read the EC contracts as they are kept by the factory, . We do not know the contract rules or our rights, so we lose many entitlements. Some workers do not even have EC contracts at all. When workers are dismissed, we do not know what protection we have,” workers said.
Workers also said the factory management, including the manager of Myanmar Handsome, has not allowed workers to read the agreements between employers and employees.
Labour activists say that according to the law, three copies of an EC contract must be prepared for the relevant parties.
“One copy of the employer-employee agreement must be submitted to the Directorate of Labour, one copy must be kept by the employer, and one copy must be given to the worker. This is clearly stated in the law,” labour advocates said.
However, workers say Myanmar Handsome garment factory keeps the EC contracts without giving copies to workers. They also claim that some contracts contain forged worker signatures.
Myanmar Handsome garment factory is located on Saya San Road, Ywar Thar Gyi Industrial Zone, South Dagon Township, Yangon, and is owned by Chinese citizen. The factory currently manufactures brands including LCW, P@VV, I@VV, and UNIFORM.
