Workers from Myanmar Fala Fala Clothing garment factory said they are demanding increases in daily wage and other entitlements. They stated that the demand for wage raises began this morning, July 17, and that a large number of workers are participating.

“We’re demanding an increase in daily wage from 10,000 to 12,000 kyats, overtime pay from 2,100 to 2,700 kyats, and that the regular daily bonus not be cut if we clock out at 4:30 PM. These demands are being made from within the factory,” they said.

Currently, the attendance bonus is 40,000 kyats, but workers said that those who clock out two hours early receive only 20,000 kyats, and those who go home at 4:30 PM also have 20,000 kyats deducted. Additionally, they are given only 6,800 kyats in daily wage for working on off days.

“In the past, they’d cut the entire 40,000 kyats daily bonus even if we were just late. Now, they cut the bonus just for clocking out at 4:30 PM. That policy has been in place for just one month. But our work hours are already 8 hours a day. Isn’t that complete if we work 8 hours? Is it not a full workday? So, we’re asking them not to deduct our daily bonus if we go home in the evening,” workers said.

While only a small number of workers initially participated in the protest, the number grew after lunchtime, they reported.

“Only about ten people joined at first. More workers joined in after lunch. We saw that the upper floor was locked up by the factory where other workers are located, likely to prevent them from joining. Factory representatives have said they will negotiate,” they said.

Myanmar Fala Fala Clothing garment factory is located in Mya Road, Thadukan Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon, employing around 2,000 workers.
