Workers at Myanmar Dongxin Garment Factory report that the factory has announced plans to reduce the wages of daily wage workers.

“The factory owner’s wife’s interpreter said it. They announced in a meeting that they would reduce the pay for daily workers. They told us to file complaints wherever we want if we’re not satisfied. They also said that our wages depend on their will,” workers said.

The wage cut is set to affect salaries for the month of May. Around 100 daily workers are currently employed under fixed 8-hour work shifts with separate overtime payments, according to the workers.

The factory employs around 1,000 workers, most of whom are paid daily wages. Workers also stated that the factory deducts daily wages on days when the factory’s generator breaks down and operations are suspended.

“The labour offices side with the employers when transaction is involved. The factory just says ‘go complain wherever we want.’ Workers are afraid because they’ll be exploited,” said one worker.

Myanmar Dongxin Garment Co., Ltd is a Chinese national-owned factory located on Nawaday Min Gyi Road, Hlaing Thar Yar Industrial Zone 3, Yangon.
