It is said that stuffs from the Citizen Pay department of the Myanmar Citizens Bank were suspended without getting a prior notification. More than 100 employees were laid off and almost all of them are working at the remote areas.
“They suspended us without informing in advanced. Employees from townships where there is no Myanmar Citizens Bank were suspended. The total number is more than 100. The office didn’t say anything and we don’t have contact. We only get paid more than 90,000 kyats,” said an employee who was suspended.
Most of the suspended workers have worked around 3 years at the department and the salary should be more than 2 lakhs but the employee said that they got paid the May salary only in the evening of August 15, 2024. There is no Employment Contract between the Myanmar Citizens Bank and the employers and the employers that the sudden job suspending cost a lot to them.
The 2013 Employment and Skill Development Law stipulates that an EC contract (Employment Contract) must be signed within 30 days of being appointed as an employee. According to this law, an employer who failed to sign an EC contract within 30 days can be imprisoned for not more than 6 months or fine or both punishments can be imposed.
In addition, the Labor Law stipulates that a month's advance notice is required for termination of job and in the case of sudden termination of employment, the employee must be paid one month notice fee and compensation according to the length of their service.
“We don’t have employment contract and we don’t hope any actions in accordance with the labor laws. They don’t contact us and we lost our times. I will just find another job. It was a dead end job and the salary is not a sufficient one. We want them to sympathize of being fired in these times where everything is unstable,” said the worker.
Myanmar Citizens Bank is an long-standing bank established in 1992.
