The Lon John International Chinese-owned factory opened in the Mingalardone Township, Yangon Region has about 600 workers and manufacturing Civil engineering uniforms, and the workers say that there are violations of labor rights in the current workplace, and they want to solve it.
The worker said that due to the fact that they do not receive the legal benefits that every worker is entitled to in the workplace, whether it is due to health or an emergency, 40,000 to 50,000 kyats are cut as daily wages, attendance bonus and grade bonuses are cut.
"Missing a day of work due to illness or other emergency reasons is cut 40,000 to 50,000 kyats. Each worker's bonus is different, so the cut is different. There is no trade union to discuss and negotiate for the workers," said the worker.
In the workplace, workers are asking for 100 pieces of cloth per hour, as it is difficult to meet this standard all supers and supers shout and swear and asking for it and the workers have to work without taking a water break or going to toilet. Even if they meet the record, they are appointed other tasks too.
"The employer unfairly demands the standard of clothing. If the standard is not met, we are asked to sign the warning and if it is 3 times we are fired. Those who are not fired are not called for OT the other days like a punishment. After that the managers and all supers rudely pointed their fingers towards our face and swear us badly," said a worker who don’t want to be named.
Workers are collected at least 500 kyat and intimidates the workers who refuse to pay saying that they will not collect donations for them if there is a welfare issue in their family, the worker said.
The workers said that since there are more than 600 workers in the workplace, there are not enough seats during the lunch break so some of them have to sit down on the floor to eat, so that they want to make it convenient for them to sit on the floor and eat.
Workers request for resolvents of not allowing leaves, forced appointing, using slanders as they are violations of the law and the officials to solve the money collecting for no reason and if there is a problem within the workplace.
