Workers say that at the garment factory owned by Myanmar Guotai Huasheng Glory Fashion Co., Ltd, a line supervisor told a pregnant worker not to take leave and instructed her to have an abortion.
“A supervisor from Line 5 told a pregnant worker who took medical leave to go to the clinic, ‘You’re causing trouble at work. Don’t take leave. If possible, just terminate the pregnancy,’” a female worker said.
Workers said that line supervisors from Line 5, Line 8, Line 10, and Line 16 treat workers harshly, and that HR threatens workers who talk back to assistant supervisors or supervisors by forcing them to sign warning letters and saying they will be dismissed.
“When targets aren’t met, assistant supervisors and supervisors shout and swear. They call workers into the office and force them to sign warning letters. The Line 16 supervisor not only swears when his demanded target isn’t met, but also calls overtime when production isn’t completed. If workers don’t work overtime, he immediately tells them to quit,” a worker said.
Workers also said that female workers are not granted leave entitlements, that HR says gate passes will not be issued, and that assistant supervisors, supervisors, and HR hold grudges against workers who raise difficulties, closely monitoring them and looking for faults.
“HR even searches inside workers’ handbags. HR says, ‘You’re not allowed to eat snacks during work hours—don’t compare yourselves to me.’ Even if we don’t eat the snacks, we have to sign a warning letter if they’re found in our bag. We accept being warned for eating snacks during work hours. But now, just finding snacks leads to a warning,” a female worker said.
Workers said that because leave requests are not approved, missing one day of work results in deductions of more than 50,000 kyats.
“Workers’ daily wage is 11,300 kyats. The attendance bonus is 50,000 kyats. As for grade pay, assistant supervisors and supervisors only give higher grades to those they get along with. Leave is not always granted,” they said.
The garment factory owned by Myanmar Guotai Huasheng Glory Fashion Co., Ltd is located on U Htun Nyo Road, Industrial Zone (2), Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon City, and workers said it is a Chinese citizen-owned factory. More than 1,000 workers are producing shirts and trousers under the Xside and LC Waikiki brands, and it is known that no trade union has been formed at the factory.
