Workers at Jin Yuan (Myanmar) Garment factory are facing hardship as their March salaries, which were due on April 5, have not been paid. The factory is located on Kin Wun Min Gyi Road, Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon, according to the Solidarity of Trade Union Myanmar (STUM).
“The factory didn’t inform us in advance that salaries wouldn’t be paid. They only told us after work on the 5th. At first, they said they would give us 100,000 kyats as a partial payment and said we could collect the rest later. But they didn’t mention a specific date. Management held meetings and said they would try to give us about half the salary on Monday when workers said they would file complaints,,” workers reported.
According to labour laws, factories are required to pay workers' salaries by the 5th of every month. Because of this, many workers waited inside the factory until 8 PM on April 5, expecting to receive full payment for March. Management later said they would try to pay 50% of salaries by April 7, but gave no guarantee of full payment.
Due to the lack of salary, many workers said they faced serious difficulties, and some had to pawn or sell personal belongings to cover basic expenses.
With rising prices and increasing housing and dormitory fees in Myanmar, STUM has condemned Jin Yuan (Myanmar) Garment for failing to pay wages in full and announced that it will assist workers in demanding their lawful pay.
