Although the Ministry of Labor announced the formation of safety and health committees in the workplace, the labours said that the processes in the workplace is insufficient.
Although guidelines have been issued for preventing safety measures within the workplace such as using chemicals, electricity and accident potential situations (For example - having sufficient windows to reduce temperature. preventing damage when moving large loads), the practical actions are still inadequate.
“The ventilation in our factory is not good. In the summer, some even faint cavity. Also, the smell of the toilet always stinks. The cleaning of the factory is done only on the day of the inspection and the day buyer's come. There was no smell on those days. But they don’t focus on it on the rest of the time.”, said by a factory labour.
According to the list of the Ministry of Labor, total 22 teams of the occupational safety and health committee of workplace have been formed with 21 teams in factories which has over 50 labours and a team in a factory lower than that number.
“They told in advanced if there is an inspection to take place. So, everything is alright when they inspected as they have done everything. They would only know the real situation only if they do surprise checks. Nothing changed in this way. There are many cases of having no soap to wash the hands and not enough drinking water if the inspector went back. And the factories don’t even seem the accidents as a problem.”, said by a former factory trade union member Ma Thander.
Before the military takeover, the workers collectively demanded the requirements and do's and don'ts for workplace safety. The laboural activists and the labour federations had also done awareness raising but at present, no one can’t do anymore.
