Workers from NEW FUBON Company Limited which locates at Pyin Si Min Thar Gyi Road, Shwe Lin Ban Industrail Zone, West Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon Region said that they are having some issues as the factory is recircuiting excessive amount of overtime without giving a day off.
The factory which is owned by a Chinese national is manufacturing MOHITO brand with more than 150 labors and only been open for about 4 months.
Currently, they are being forced to work without the EC contract and to work overtime without their consents, and they are having a hard time as their health are badly affected as they doesn’t get enough sleep after continue to work normal working hours after working overtimes, all light and all night overtimes on official holidays, public holidays and Saturdays.
"The main problem is not getting enough sleep. We are pressured and discriminated against by the supers, all supers and the manager if we can’t work overtime the next day due to the lack of sleep. Because of this, we have no choice. We have to do double duty," said a worker.
The worker said that they have had to go on such overnight stays for at least 15 days a month.
The labor law stipulates that any worker must only work 20 hours of overtime per week.
In addition, the worker said that the fabric targets for the workers in the workplace is not set consistently, but the demand is increasing every day, and they are asking for more than the amount that can be sewn.
“They ask 40,50 and 100 fabrics for today. When the workers met the target by working all the time without a break to go to toilet or drink water, the target is raised the next day. As it is a pressurization, the supers and all supers swears and yells everyday if the targets are not met. New workers who asked for a gate pass to issue their salary at the old factory are also scolded such as ‘If you wanna go, take the resignation letter together,” said the worker.
The workers said that they want to appeal that the employer to only demand the target that they can sew, not to force all light, all night and overtimes without the workers’ consents, the supervisors such as managers, all supers and supers not to pressure and discriminate against the workers.
