A manager at the GTP Goldan Theparerg garment factory fired a married couple following a dispute during the Thingyan holidays, without proper investigation or due process, according to the couple involved.

“It started with a verbal argument between my husband and me. Then, five or six workers from another department suddenly jumped on my husband. He didn’t do anything to them. His whole face was swollen. Instead of dealing with those who attacked him, the manager dragged my husband outside the factory and locked the door on him. The manager summoned both of us when they returned to work on April 23, forced us to sign a resignation letter, and terminated our employment without involving the Workplace Coordinating Committee (WCC). They don’t accept our explanations as well,” said the female worker.

The attackers weren’t fired or disciplined. Only the couple were dismissed. They were threaten with police if they don’t resign, according to the wife.

“We were assaulted, forced to resign, and then fired. No justice at all. The manager acted alone. I even asked for a termination letter, but they wouldn’t give it to me. He told me to ‘just leave, b**ch’ and kicked me out,” she added.

The couple also said the factory regularly forces excessive overtime and threatens workers with department transfers, denial of overtime pay, or dismissal if they refuse to comply.

GTP Goldan Theparerg Co. Ltd is a Thai national-owned garment factory specializing in denim jeans. It is located in Industrial Zone (1), Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon, and employs over 1,000 workers.
