GTIG Guohua Glory garment factory give 50 lakhs MMK compensation for a worker who injured on head in a workplace incident instead of taking responsibility and deliver healthcare

A worker who could potentially become disabled after injuring their head in a workplace incident at the GTIG Guohua Glory garment factory which locates at Watayar Industrial Zone, Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon region was given only 50 lakhs as compensation instead of being taken responsibility and delivered healthcare. 

The injured worker started working at the factory in December 2017 as an Operator and fell off from the transportation bus in the evening of July 2023 and injured on head.

Due to the impact, the worker suffered nose bleeding, dizziness and a CT scan was taken at the Yangon General Hospital and received treatment for an injury to the brain’s capillaries.

The worker returned to work at August 2023 as the factory doesn’t extend medical leave and the all super of the production line humilate the worker with a speaker while they can’t deliever the demands due to their health conditions.

In March 2024, the worker underwent further surgery at the Kyimyindaing public hospital for the injury, but the factory did not provide financial support for treatment.

STUM also stated that the factory did not provide any support for the worker from July 22, 2023 to July 8, 2024 who was injured in the workplace incident.

The employer’s COC, manager, employer’s WCC and officials of factory general worker organizations went negotiation in the manger office on October 25, 2024 and it was said that the employer can’t take any responsibility and will give 50 lakhs as compensation.

The injured worker requested assistance from STUM to help resolve the absences of the employer.

STUM stated that “STUM seems this incident is an incident where the entrepreneur is unwilling to take responsibility for the worker who was injured in their workplace STUM will assist in obtaining the legal rights for those harms.”

 The factory force the worker to lie the reason of the injury to say that it was caused by a slip and the worker lost their right such as social security leave and wages.

The factory which failed to take responsibility on injured worker is manufacturing UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON, Bestseller and ONLY brand apparels.
