Golden Propitious (Myanmar) Co.,Ltd garment factory has been making workers do daily overtime and even forcing them to work on holidays, according to workers. They also report being pressured with threats of reprimands.

“The factory constantly calls for overtime. They threaten to withhold our grade bonuses if we refuse. They make us work over 100 hours of overtime per month. The supervisors even say that they can call overtime as much as they want if they give us overtime slip and wage. And they can solve legal issues with money. They call us in until 9:30 PM and for overnight shifts. They say we’ll be docked one day’s pay if we’re late the next morning. They also call us in for overtime on holidays. We get scolded the next day if we refuse,” workers said.

Workers say they are required to work at least 3 to 5 hours of overtime per day, and up to 7 hours for overnight shifts.

“On Saturdays, they require us until 6:30 PM. They might let us leave at 4:30 if we call the labour office. But every week we’re forced to do two or three all-night shifts. We work three times a month on Sundays,” a worker added.

They also said there’s no rest after lunch and that they must work straight through until 7:30 PM. They get a small snack if they work until 9:30 PM and fried rice with an egg if they work overnight shift. But they are then required to sleep at the factory.

“We sleep overnight in the factory. We're hungry, and there are lots of mosquitoes. We only go home in the morning. The conditions are terrible—it feels like we’re being oppressed,” a worker said.

There are also health and hygiene concerns in the factory’s water and dining areas. Workers report verbal abuse if production targets are not met.

“The production targets are too high. If we don’t meet them, supervisors yell and insult us. The water in the toilets is yellow. The basin for washing hands and face doesn’t work properly. There’s only one tap with water. We even have to sign in and out to use the toilet. The walkway between the dining hall and the factory isn’t covered—when it rains, we get wet. The dining space is cramped, and there’s no proper path. We have to eat under the hot sun f it doesn’t rain. The ferry transport provided is also limited, so we’re packed in tightly,” a worker explained.

Workers added that factory management trains them ahead of inspections, which results in responses that don’t reflect actual conditions on the ground.

Golden Propitious (Myanmar) Co.,Ltd is located on Mya Road, Thadukan Industrial Zone, Shwepyitha Township, Yangon. The factory is Chinese citizen-owned and employs around 800 workers, producing down outerwear for export.
