Workers at Feng Teng Garment Co. Ltd report to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) that they are suffering from psychological abuse as a result of being scolded by a Chinese woman for not meeting production targets.

“The employer is unfairly demanding production quantities that workers cannot meet. The Chinese woman yells and scolds us if we don’t meet those targets. We are subjected to psychological abuse every single day. It’s not just her—supervisors also say, ‘Don’t bother coming to work if you can’t meet the target —go find something else to do,’” a worker said.

Workers say they are being hired as daily-wage workers and are not issued ID cards with lanyards for months, which negatively affects their mental well-being.

On Saturdays, they are required to work overtime until 7:30 PM regularly. Many workers are compelled to work overtime even though they do not want to work until 7:30 PM. The factory sets the wage scales as follows: Grade A workers receive 11,800 kyats, Grade B workers 10,800 kyats, and Grade C workers 9,800 kyats (including daily wage, support allowance, and skill allowance), and the full attendance bonus is 40,000 kyats, according to workers.

“Even though these levels are set, there aren’t many workers classified as Grade A. The factory doesn’t want to grant many A-level classifications. We get no leave at all. Missing one day of work can cost us over 30,000 kyats. One worker had to quit because they weren’t granted leave for their father’s funeral. The workers are the ones who suffer,” a worker said.

Workers report that there is no proper dining area provided, and they have to eat wherever they can inside the workplace. The toilets are unhygienic, and access is restricted only to those who have lanyard ID cards, which is affecting workers’ health. Additionally, the company transportation is unreliable with no fixed schedule, and workers often miss it. There is also no medical clinic in the factory, they say.

Feng Teng Garment Co. Ltd is a Chinese-owned factory located in Myanmar and employs over 1,000 workers. It is known to be producing garments for the MOHITO brand.
