Factory workers are cut at least 10,000 kyats for Thadingyut vernation

LITA MYANMAR Co, LTD garment factory workers said that each factory workers are cut at least 10,000 kyats for vernation of line managers and supervisors in addition of the labour right violations.

The factory locates at Compound No - , Shwe Pyi Thar Industrial Zone 4, Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon region and owned by a Chinese national.

The factory is manufacturing BURTLE, PUNT RPMA, HEARTGREEN, Golden Bear, A DAY IN THE LIFE SENSE OF PLACE brand apparals with more than 1,000 workforces but there is no trade union in the factory.

“They force workers who put Thanakha on their face are forced to remove with a wet tower in the entrance of the factory. Those who complaint are taken photo and issued a warning. They should make a rule if they don’t want workers to put Thanakha in the workplace but removing it with a wet tower is a complete humiliation,” said a worker from the workplace. 

All supers are charged 50,000 kyats and workers are charged 10,000 kyats mandatorily for Thadingyut vernation of factory manager and workers are not satisfied with the decision.

The working hours are from 7:30 am to 11:30 am and from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm and the line manager Daw and the two assistances are pressurizing the workers to work nonstop without allowing to rest.

“We feel like inmates as soon as we enter the factory. We have to drink water at the shelf and have to pick up the water bottles ourselves. It is difficult of pregnant workers. Workers are inspected like a suspect at the end of the day making us to go back only after 7:00 pm although the working hours end at 6:30 pm,” a worker explained.

The underage workers are hired in the factory without medical certificate and they are hired as adults. Around 60 workers who are hired as day labours are forced to work free on weekends and they are not appointed as permanent stuffs after working for more than 3 months.

“Workers from production lines get paid 30,000 kyats attendance bonus and other workers get paid 20,000 kyats only. The cleaning workers and helpers aren’t paid a kyat. This is a discrimination among the workers who are working each assigned jobs,” a worker stated.

The factory doesn’t provide transportation for weekend overtimes although they forcibly recruit overtimes, making workers to come with their own plans and yet there are verbally abused for missing overtime. 

Some workers are hired without employment contract and workers are not provided social security cards although they have contributed around 8 months for it.

Workers are demanding following terms for a secure and violation free workplace.

1.       To provide social security card,

2.     To not force day laborers for free on weekends

3.      To provide employment contracts for workers who doesn’t have it yet

4.     To appoint workers with more than 3 months of service as day laborers

5.     To provide transportation for overtime
