Factories and General Labour Laws Inspection Department doesn’t resolve excessive overtime recruitment

 GYSEN Myanmar garment factory which located in Wartayar Industrial Zone, Shwe Pyi Thar Township was reported for excessive overtime recruitment but Factories and General Labour Laws Inspection Department doesn’t resolve the complaint, according to the workers.

The factory called overtime until 9:00 pm on weekdays and until 12:00 am on Saturdays since August 1, 2024. Furthermore, workers are also called overtime on Sundays and complaint to the Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Factories and General Labour Laws Inspection Department for being forced to work excessive overtime without day off.

The workers inquired the Township chief officer after no updates for two weeks and they replied that it is not a case they can instruct and worried if workers could not come to legal battles. They also said that they can investigate the factory only if the workers report to them if the factory violate next time.

Workers are heading to report to the director of the department regarding that the township office doesn’t resolve.

A person helping the workers said that negotiating instead of taking actions upon the labour right violating factory is breaking the laws.

GYSEN garment factory has been operating since September 2019 and hires around 800 workers. It is also the most violating factory according to the information.

According to the workers, more than 500 workers were forced to hide in the GYSEN 3 garage by the HR and supervisors when the inspectors investigated the factory regarding the Sunday overtime on August 25.
