Garment factory workers said that they are being recruited substitute overtimes for Thadingyut Holidays
“Its substitute overtimes for Thadingyut Holidays. They cut us by hours for holidays. They cut half of Saturday with hourly rate. 8 hours for two Saturday. 8 hours is counted as one working day. They don’t negotiate and we lost overtime fees. We doesn’t get double. But workers don’t dare to complaint. Another factory are doing the same as well. Workers want casual leave during the end of the year but being afraid ask. We lost all our bonuses if we don’t work overtime on Saturday’s half-day,” said a worker.
Workers are required to work substitute overtime for a half day on every Saturday in order to prevent fabric orders delay as there were 5 consecutive holidays in Thadingyut including 3 government holiday and a weekend.
“Our factory doesn’t call us yet. I heard that some factories are calling. Some paid for overtime but some don’t. Our factory doesn’t have much orders so they don’t call it yet,” said a garment factory worker.
Workers said that they were sometime not paid for substitute overtimes and not paid double for Sunday overtime. They are also cut for fabric bonuses, grade bonuses and attendance bonus if they missed the overtime.
The Thadingyut holiday is from 16th to 18th October and workers are having difficulties to go back to hometowns due to the territorial instability
