#Letter

Hello Myanmar Labour News,

The name of our factory is Eurostyle, located at the descent of Shwepyithar Bridge, near Ayeyar Mya bus stop, Panpe Khaung Maung Khet Road  Shwepyithar Industrial Zone 4, Insein Township, Yangon, Currently, there are nearly 2,000 workers and staff employed at the factory.

I am writing this letter to report about a Chinese technician called “Jie Jie” from Building A of the factory.

In the factory, there are four sewing line buildings A, B, C, and D. In addition, there are departments such as Cutting, Packing, Store, and the Technical (Sample) department. I do not know the conditions in the other buildings, but what I want to report concerns the situation in Building A.

The Chinese woman in Building A holds a line manager position, but she does not have strong technical knowledge and also shows weaknesses in management.

She often scolds workers directly and enters the sewing lines shouting in Chinese.

When some workers go to the restroom and their sewing stations are temporarily empty, she scolds them. She also shouts and scolds without asking about the reason when workers at the back of the line have to wait for garments because the previous point cannot supply pieces in time. We can tell from her gestures that she is scolding us even though we do not understand Chinese.

In addition, workers in the strap line (sewing shoulder straps and waist straps) have been forced to work for 24 hours, and then required to work the night shift again the following day. Workers are scolded say if they do not want to work, they .

The management system is also not good. Do they have the right to shout at workers in ways that damage our dignity?

The factory has both a WCC and an HR department, but we do not feel that the WCC is functioning in practice.

When we report issues to HR, they instead blame the sewing line workers, saying:
“You have to work overtime because your line cannot finish sewing on time.”

Currently, the factory only pays a daily wage of 11,000 kyats. The overtime pay is only 2,000 kyats. Workers receive two pyi bags of rice once per month and 30,000 kyats as attendance bonus.

Even after working nearly 80 hours of overtime, workers receive only about 500,000 to 600,000 kyats per month, which is not enough during this period when living costs are rising.

Therefore, we would like to request the following:

  1. Increase the daily wage.
  2. Increase the attendance bonus and overtime pay.
  3. Ensure that foreign Chinese staff do not directly manage basic workers, and that supervision is carried out through supervisors.
  4. Do not force workers to work overtime.
  5. Ensure that overtime does not exceed 80 hours per week in accordance with the law.

Eurostyle Worker
