Workers from Dishang Fashion (Myanmar) Co., Ltd, a garment factory located on Mingyi Mahaminkhaung Road, Shwe Than Lwin Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon, have been calling for resolution to workplace violations.

The factory is Chinese citizen-owned and operates with over 900 workers.

Workers are asking for previous workplace benefits to be reinstated, for the factory to stop demanding excessive garment targets, and to stop transferring workers to other departments without their consent.

Workers currently employed at the factory said that workplace rights started to be violated after they protested in June for a wage increase. Up to now, their demands have not been addressed and negotiations have been refused. The Workplace Coordinating Committee (WCC) has also failed to handle the matter properly; workers told the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).

Additionally, the manager reportedly threatened protesting workers that action would be taken against them according to the EC contract.

The Chinese citizen-owned factory manufactures the ONLY, BESTSELLER, PImKIe, and FIRST DOWN brands pants and shirts .

Workers’ demands are as follows:

  1. Process according to the EC contract. Do not transfer departments without mutual agreement.
  2. WCC must resolve violations of workers’ rights.
  3. Resolve workplace instability caused by unfair, biased, and arbitrary appointments of management staff that do not follow the factory’s previous practice.
  4. U Aung Naing, the advisor, must stop his disrespectful and aggressive behavior toward employees.
  5. Reinstate the previous 15-minute snack break. If not possible, increase daily wage from 11,000 kyats to 15,000 kyats.
  6. Interpreters must not interfere in workplace matters beyond language interpretation. If they do, action must be taken.
  7. Reinstate the previous 5-minute grace period for late arrivals.
  8. Uniforms and head covers must be made with cooler fabric.
  9. Do not force workers to sign warning letters if quotas are not met. Provide realistic garment quotas.
  10. set a loading fee for male workers who lift garment boxes onto trucks in the packing department.
  11. Replace the faulty forklift used for transportation and purchase additional equipment to improve workflow.
  12. Set a daily heat resistance allowance of 2,500 kyats for workers in the ironing department.
  13. Increase grades monthly.
  14. Calculate overtime pay based on daily wage.
  15. Workers do not want supervisors.
