Workers at the COSTEC garment factory are reportedly carrying out demands inside the factory starting from 8:00 a.m. on January 22.

According to a participant, workers are demanding the reinstatement of a labour organization leader who was dismissed by factory officials, as well as the dismissal of HR staff who are carrying out oppressive actions, a participant told Myanmar Labour News.

Earlier this month, after nearly two weeks of demands inside the factory, the daily wage was increased by 500 kyats. After that, the factory forcibly required workers to sign documents stating that they were aware of the wage payment system and factory rules.

As the complaint regarding wage reductions had not been resolved, the labour leader and members of the labour organization refused to sign those documents.

As a result of that refusal, the factory dismissed the labour organization leader on the morning of January 21.

The garment factory owned by COSTEC INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD is located on Mya Taung Wun Gyi Road, Shwepyitha Industrial Zone (3), Insein Township, Yangon, and employs around 1,000 workers. It is reported that the factory is currently manufacturing brands such as Wakiki - X Shetter and Zero Staage.
