Bail Requests for Labour Activist Daw Myo Myo Aye and 7 Others Rejected

The Shwepyitha Township Court in Yangon rejected separate bail applications on September 8 for labour activist Daw Myo Myo Aye and seven other members of the Solidarity Trade Unions of Myanmar (STUM), according to a statement from the group.

The group had appeared before the Shwepyitha court on September 1, where their bail applications were submitted and subsequently rejected, STUM said.

A new hearing date has been set for September 15 to examine witness testimonies submitted by the prosecution.

Daw Myo Myo Aye, the leader of STUM, is suffering from hypertension and diabetes. Although she currently has access to medication for diabetes, daily medical checkups to monitor her condition have not been allowed. STUM also stated that her dental health has severely deteriorated.

She was arrested by the military council at her home on the night of July 25. Between July 26 and 28, her daughter and other STUM members were also arrested.

On August 18, Daw Myo Myo Aye and her group were brought before the Shwepyitha Township Court and formally charged under Sections 5(1)(f) and (g) of the The Prison and Probation Act. Each member faces individual charges and has been transferred to Insein Prison in Yangon, STUM said.
