Workers at the garment factory Asian Just Co., Ltd. (also known as Asia Thamadi), located on U Tun Nyo Road in Shwepyithar Township, Yangon Region, say they are facing hardships due to the factory's bi-monthly wage disbursement system.
“It's not convenient at all to receive our salary in two installments. We worked the whole month, but we only get part of our pay at a time. Once we get paid, debt collectors immediately come asking. They mess with us if we can’t pay them,” a worker explained.
The factory pays wages in two separate portions, around the 5th and 10th of each month according to employees. Workers claim they were never consulted or asked for their consent beforehand although the factory informed them about the split-payment system.
“The factory keep a record and deduct money from our pay at the end of the month whenever we make a mistake and produce defective garments. The factory manager personally instructs this,” said one worker.
In addition, wage miscalculations are reportedly common, leading to frequent disputes between workers and management.
Workers also raised concerns about poor hygiene and unsafe conditions in the factory compound. “The toilets are not safe; we can be seen from outside. They're not clean at all,” they said, adding that incidents of harassment have been reported as well.
Regarding healthcare, the factory clinic only has a doctor available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while on other days, an untrained woman, not a certified nurse distributes medicine without proper guidance, workers said.
Asian Just Co., Ltd., located on Twin Thin Thike Wun U Htun Nyo Road, Shwepyitha Township, employs over 1,800 workers.
