The HR manager of Asdet Myanmar Garment Factory reportedly told supervisors that workers who fail to meet the designated production targets could be dismissed, according to workers.
Workers also said the factory increased the production targets after raising the daily wage to 12,000 kyats.
“The factory said that the production targets must also be increased since they increased the daily wage to 12,000 kyats. The HR manager called the supervisors and said that if workers cannot meet the target, they don’t need to come to work and the factory does not need to pay compensation. Workers are already being dismissed. At morning meetings, they also said that workers must come to work 15 minutes earlier if they cannot meet the production targets, they ,” a worker said.
Workers said HR informed them that employment contracts (EC) would only be provided after completing seven months of service. When workers requested gate passes due to illness, supervisors reportedly told them, “It’s not a fatal disease—take medicine and rest for a while.”
Workers also said that even when production targets are met, additional targets are imposed, and if they fail to meet them, they are required to work overnight overtime shifts.
Workers reportedly worked overnight overtime shifts on Saturdays for about a month in previous months, and for nearly two months they were also required to work overtime on Sundays, which are normally rest days.
“We had to work an overnight shift on February 7. More than 200 workers worked that shift. The factory provided food, but it smelled bad and was not edible. Some workers chose not to eat the dinner and continued working overtime,” some workers said.
Large purified water containers are placed in the dining hall, but during working hours workers are only provided small water bottles according to the number of workers, which they say does not meet health standards.
“Small water bottles are placed only in designated areas, and we are only allowed to drink there. Whoever sees a bottle drinks from it, meaning many people share the same bottles. It’s not hygienic. HR also said workers must buy small water bottles for 300 kyats each if they want to replace them, and even personal bottles are not allowed,” a worker said.
Workers also said the Workplace Coordination Committee (WCC) has not helped resolve the workplace difficulties they are facing, reportedly saying that “the factory cannot do anything.”
Asdet Myanmar Garment Factory is located in Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaing Tharyar Township, Yangon Region, and is a Chinese citizen-owned factory producing underwear garments.
