Approximately 1,000 workers at GTIG Guohua Glory garment factory, located in Plot No.— of Wataya Industrial Zone in Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon Region, have staged a work stoppage to demand a daily wage increase of 13,000 MMK.

The factory, owned by Chinese investors, is reported to have both a Workplace Coordination Committee (WCC) and a trade labor union.

Workers are demanding the wage hike due to rising commodity prices and the increasing difficulty in meeting daily living expenses. They say they want wages that reflect current economic realities and are calling for a fair adjustment to their pay.

The factory is known to manufactures international brands such as ONLY and Bestseller, with more than a thousand workers employed.

The protest began after management responded to a demand from the Iron Section for a 60,000 MMK monthly heat-resistance allowance by offering only 10,000 MMK. Workers then initiated a broader strike action.

“We are asking for a daily wage of 13,000 MMK. The Iron Section is also demanding a 60,000 MMK heat-resistance allowance,” said one worker.

The GTIG Guohua Glory facility is part of a cluster of four factories operating in the same compound. The current protest is reportedly taking place at the GTIG 2 plant.
